What is Umbrel?
Umbrel turns your mini PC or Raspberry Pi into a personal server with an app-store experience. You browse a catalog of self-hosted apps, click install, and it just works — no command line, no config files, no frustration.
Who it's for
Complete beginners. People who want their server to feel like setting up a new phone. If the phrase "flash this ISO to a USB stick using Balena Etcher" sounds intimidating, Umbrel is your answer. The community on Discord is huge and genuinely helpful.
Pros
- Easiest UX by far — installs in under 30 minutes, apps install in under 5
- Great app catalog — Immich, Nextcloud, Jellyfin, Navidrome, Pi-hole, everything you need to replace your subscriptions
- One-click updates — both the OS and individual apps update from the web UI
- Remote access built in — Umbrel handles the tunneling so you can access your server from anywhere
Cons
- Smaller catalog than YunoHost — if you want something obscure, it might not be there
- ARM-heavy — originally built for Raspberry Pi, so some apps don't have great x86 support
- Less room to grow — you can't easily SSH in and start tweaking configs. That's a feature for beginners, a limitation for tinkerers
Best for
Your first self-hosted project. Install it on a Beelink EQ14 or GMKtec G3 Plus, set up Immich for photos this weekend, and cancel Google Photos on Monday. You can always migrate to a more flexible system later — the data is yours.
