What is YunoHost?
YunoHost is a full operating system built on Debian that turns any machine into a self-hosting powerhouse. It has the largest app catalog of the three beginner platforms — over 300 apps — and a community that's been around since 2012. The documentation is excellent, and the admin web interface handles everything.
Who it's for
People who want options. If you're not sure exactly what you need yet, YunoHost's catalog means you're unlikely to hit a wall. You still don't need the terminal — everything is done through the admin panel — but it's closer to a "real server" experience than Umbrel.
Pros
- 300+ apps — the biggest catalog. If there's an open-source service for it, YunoHost probably has it
- Excellent documentation — mature project with thorough guides, forums, and a helpful community
- Built-in backup system — backup and restore individual apps or the whole system from the web UI
- SSD-friendly — designed to run on a regular Debian install, so you can start with the GUI and grow into the terminal later
Cons
- Less polished UX — the admin panel works but doesn't feel as smooth as Umbrel's app store
- Fiddlier domain setup — YunoHost assumes you own a domain and wants you to configure DNS, which can trip up beginners
- No built-in tunneling — you'll need to handle your own remote access (guides exist, but it's an extra step)
Best for
People who want room to grow without outgrowing their platform. If you think you might eventually want an obscure app or want to learn Linux gradually without being thrown into the deep end, YunoHost is the right balance.
What you'll need
- A mini PC (x86 recommended — the Pi works but is slower with the admin panel)
- A USB stick (8GB+)
- A domain name (optional but recommended for full functionality)
- About an hour for first setup
